Zwick Presents Information on Automotive Lightweighting in ASM Webinar

Zwick USA has partnered with ASM International to provide valuable updates on how materials testing supports lightweighting in the automotive industry.

On Thursday, July 13 at 3:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time, Zwick USA will take part in an ASM-hosted webinar to present Advanced Characterization of Lightweight Materials for Automotive Crash Simulations. Presenters for the webinar include John Halley, Midwest Regional Sales Manager for Zwick, and Dr. Fadi Abu-Farha, Assistant Professor of Automotive Engineering at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR).  

Lightweighting is critical for reducing fuel consumption levels in future vehicles, and automotive OEMs are striving to use the latest generations of materials with high strength/density ratios, particularly advanced high strength steels (AHSSs), aluminum alloys and composites. While the quasi-static deformation behavior is important for forming and manufacturing simulations, the high-speed response in a crash event is critical and can dictate the viability of adopting a new material grade in future automotive structures.

This webinar sheds light on this important topic and provides information supported by examples on how reliable high speed material characterization data can be obtained to support automotive CAE crash simulations. The presentation will open with an overview of the latest generations of high speed testing machines and systems. Then the presentation will cover testing technical details, such as: test samples, test procedure, the use of digital image correlation (DIC), and issues associated with high speed testing. Finally, the webinar will offer high speed testing results obtained with some of the latest generations of AHSSs and will discuss the influence that rate of deformation has on material behavior.

About the Presenters
Dr. Abu-Farha’s prime area of research is “Lightweight Materials and their Manufacturing.”  His research activities have been targeting greater utilization of lightweight materials in the transportation sector using cost-effective and energy-efficient manufacturing techniques. Particular topics of interest include: advanced material testing aided by DIC and optical metrology, bulk friction stir forming, cold and warm stamping, hot gas blow forming, and hybrid-material joining.  He received several best poster/paper awards at conferences and events including NAMRI/SME, SAE and TMS.  He is a recipient of the NSF-CAREER Award, the SME Young Manufacturing Engineering Award, the SAE Ralph Teetor Award, the USCAR Team Project Award, and the TMS Light Metals Division Award.
Halley works closely with customers in states across the Midwest, including:  Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri.  With 20 years of experience in the laboratory test equipment industry, he assists companies in the materials testing industry in finding solutions for testing across a wide range of applications, including those related to the testing of lightweight materials.  He joined Zwick in April 2016 and holds an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis.
